On May 30, 1894 Josiah H. Benton, Jr., a lawyer, gave a Memorial Day Address at The Soldiers' Club at Wellesley, Massachusetts, entitled What Women Did for the War and What the War Did for Women.

The Civil War is remembered as a war of brother against brother, with women standing innocently on the sidelines. But battlefield realities soon challenged this simplistic understanding of women's place in war.

Women in Civil War Texas is the first book dedicated to the unique experiences of Texas women during the Civil War. It connects Texas women's lives to southern women's history, and shares the diversity of experiences of women in Texas during the Civil War.

When the Civil War broke out, women answered the call for help. They broke away from their traditional roles and served in many capacities, some of them even going so far as to disguise themselves as men and enlist in the army.
