The Thomas Jackson Letters
A unique collection of previously unpublished letters describing facts and feelings about slavery and the civil war as seen from the grassroots level in Reading, Pennsylvania.
These collections contain a wide variety of primary source materials associated with the Dred Scott decision and its aftermath, including manuscripts, newspaper articles, legal documents, and pamphlets.
Site managed by the Civil War Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Civil War battlefields and providing educational programs.
Contains more than 2,300 first-person accounts of slavery and 500 black-and-white photographs of former slaves. These narratives were collected in the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) of the Works Progress Administration, later renamed Work Projects Administration (WPA).
A map of slavery’s end during the American Civil War. It encourages scholars, students, and the public to examine the wartime end of slavery in place, allowing a rigorously geographic perspective on emancipation in the United States. Maintained by the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond.
