Academia evaluates authors on their "contributions to the knowledge in the field". Part of this evaluation includes identifying the number of times a work is cited, who cited the work, and in "which outlets it is cited". Failure to provide proper attribution causes these "opportunities for credit" to disappear.
"Research integrity is based in trust and honesty, and plagiarism impacts honest contribution to scholarly knowledge and how those contributions are credited."

Research in scholarly and professional fields is seen as a community conversation between scholars, researchers, or other professionals for the purpose of sharing new insights, findings, and discoveries. Tracking who said what in these scholarly conversations is provided through the use of parenthetical citations and Works Cited/Bibliographies/References lists.
Missing or incorrect citations fails to provide proper attribution and makes it difficult to identify who contributed what information to this community conversation.
