Maps

Historically, Texans have turned to the Texas General Land Office for maps and other tools used to display and organize information about the state’s rich natural resources. This GIS page contains a collection of dynamic, interactive mapping tools that provide access to the vast collection of spatial data available at the agency, as well as download links for our authoritative datasets.

The archival map collection of the TGLO consists of over 50,000 maps dating from as early as the 1820s. Their materials do not circulate but many are available online (see GIS Maps and Data link above).

The Texas State Archives Map Collection contains original, photo-reproduced, and compiled maps covering the period from the early seventeenth through the late twentieth centuries.

The data has been clipped for Texas only. New features to the database provide the capability to assess wall-to-wall, spatially explicit, national land cover changes and trends across the United States from 2001 to 2019.

The Texas General Land Office contributes its Historic County Maps to this site. There are approximately 924 maps covering the years from 1838 through 1939.

This collection of Soil Survey Maps was produced from 1899 to 1950 by the U.S Department of Agriculture. The vast majority of the maps are at a scale of one inch equals one mile (1:63,360). While the methodology for classification of the soils is obsolete, these maps are rich in cultural detail. The maps are provided courtesy of the Geological Survey of Alabama and Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library.

The Atlas features more than 300,000 historic site records, including Historical Marker inscriptions and National Register of Historic Places property photos. Includes interactive digital maps showing site locations.
