John Hamilton McWhorter V was born in Philadephia in 1965 and received his Ph.D in Linguistics from Stanford University in 1993. He is currently an Associate Professor at Columbia University and has authored seventeen books, many of which the Porter Henderson Library owns. He has also published many articles about Creole and pidgin languages which are accessible through Library databases. He is a prolific commentator, writes for Time, CNN and the Atlantic, and hosts Lexicon Valley at Slate.
