From #BlackLivesMatter to Trump #Resistance, from the Arab Spring to the failed Turkish coup, the world has been captivated by political movements in the digital era. But the decentralized nature of social media-fueled activism is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Resilient, but leaderless. Responsive, but undisciplined. Are these new technologies truly changing the nature of protest, or are they merely updating the ways in which we observe them? And what does all this mean in the age of the Tweeter-In-Chief?

To understand a thwarted Turkish coup, an anti–Wall Street encampment, and a packed Tahrir Square, we must first comprehend the power and the weaknesses of using new technologies to mobilize large numbers of people. An incisive observer, writer, and participant in today’s social movements, Zeynep Tufekci explains in this accessible and compelling book the nuanced trajectories of modern protests—how they form, how they operate differently from past protests, and why they have difficulty persisting in their long-term quests for change.

Zeynep Tufekci is a professor and author specializing in the intersection of technology and society. She spoke at MozFest 2016 about social media platforms, inclusion and exclusion online.

Today the speed at which we spread information is so fast that a single email can launch a worldwide awareness campaign, as with the Occupy movement. Yet as techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci seeks to show, the ease of social media can actually hurt social change in the long run. From Gezi to the Arab Spring to Ukraine to Hong Kong, she shows how today's movements can miss out on the benefits of doing things the hard (and slow) way.

Can citizen journalism be an effective reaction to government censorship and political culture wars? Zeynep started asking these questions while researching Tunisia and Egypt during the Arab uprisings. Today she talks about the role of citizen media in Turkey.

Zeynep Tufekci, assistant professor at the UNC School of Information and Library Science presented "In Defense of Going Deep in a Viral World." She gave the example of KONY 2012, the viral YouTube video calling for the capture of Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony. She asserted how the story was too simple to be true and how numerous response videos juxtaposed KONY's message. Tufekci made a call to action in watching these videos, like TED Talks, to not "lean back", but lean forward in active participation and understanding.

What can we learn from the protest wave of the last years? How does social media impact the capacity for collective action? Does social media contribute to blunting movement impacts by facilitating horizontal, non-institutional and "leaderless" movements? How do these movements compare with their predecessors like the civil-rights or
anti-colonial movements? In this talk Zeynep Tufekci -- assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, a faculty associate at Berkman Center for Internet & Society, and a fellow at the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University -- discusses these questions by drawing from research on a variety of social movements including the "Arab Spring", European indignados movements, Occupy and Turkey's Gezi protests.

At the BRITE '12 conference, Professor Zeynep Tufekci of the University of North Carolina discusses how the Internet was used by activists in the Middle East to document corruption and abuse and to coordinate during the Arab Spring uprisings. Techniques that effectively changed public discourse and perceptions about governments in the Middle East provide lessons about how the Internet can affect any organization.
