Machine Intelligence and Humanity: An Alien in Our Midst by Distinguished Speaker Dr. Zeynep Tufekci

The 2017 E. James Holland Symposium on American Values is proud to present Machine Intelligence and Humanity: An Alien in Our Midst by distinguished speaker Dr. Zeynep Tufekci. Please visit the Symposium web page for more information about the topic.

As our machines get increasingly more intelligent, what will this mean for our social, political and cultural commons? There is a tendency to think of artificial intelligence as a less smart human, and to judge it by such characteristics. In this talk, writer and academic Zeynep Tufekci will explain why new forms of artificial intelligence should be viewed as its own form of intelligence, and breaks down what machine learning and similar systems could mean for a variety of dynamics, touching upon current topics such as fake news and misinformation online, self-driving cars and use of such systems in hiring, education and more.
